The High Country is well known for its numerous hiking trails of all skill and age levels as well as its cycling and mountain biking. There is plenty of free hiking along the Blue Ridge Parkway, just note the mile marker numbers while planning your adventures, as well as excellent hiking on Grandfather Mountain and in certain communities that house our Blue Ridge Cabin Rentals. Many of our cabins are literally on hiking trails, so grab a bottle of water, lock your front door and start hiking! There are now two major NC Montain Biking Parks in the Boone area, Rocky Knob Bike Park and Kerr Scott Lake Trails. And the Blue Ridge Parkway is well-known for training some of the best cycling athletes in the world, including Lance Armstrong that called Boone the best place to train in the World!

Bass Lake – Blowing Rock

Mile Marker 296.4 of the Blue Ridge Parkway, turn towards Blowing Rock, drive 1 mile

A handicap or stroller accessible .8 mile loop around the lake. Located in the valley below Moses Cone Manor, the white pines and Maple trees are truly breathtaking in the Fall. Peace and serenity and even some wildlife. Great for birdwatching Blowing Rock.

Grandfather Mountain – Linville

Blue Ridge Parkway at Mile Marker 305 (15 mi from Blowing Rock NC)

Grandfather Mountain is home to a mile-high swinging bridge (5280 ft elevation), picnic tables, a nature museum and 12 miles of regularly maintained hiking trails ranging from easy nature trails to more difficult backwoods. Park along the Blue Ridge Parkway just prior to the Grandfather Mtn entrance to enjoy free hiking, otherwise pay per person to enter the park, walk the bridge, visit the museum and enjoy its amenities. Grandfather is a MUST visit while in the High Country!
